What actually is flossing?
Removing of food particles, debris and other plaque where the brush cannot reach, i.e., the parts under the gum line and between the teeth, flossing is required. Flossing also helps you avoid bad breath and healthy teeth.
Flossing is a must because if we do not floss our teeth, it may result in tooth decay and diseases of gum also. Flossing your teeth once a day is very much necessary to prevent any tooth decays and diseases.
The Right Technique To Floss Your Teeth:
Firstly, Know which kind of floss is to be used. There are two kinds of flosses available in the market.
- Multifilament floss made of NYLON, i.e., NYLON FLOSS.
Nylon flosses have many types, they are found waxed and unwaxed. Many flavors are also available in nylon flosses. There is a significant chance of these nylon flosses getting tore or get shred. Because these nylon flosses have many strands as they are multifilament. They might break in between teeth.
The single filament or monofilament flosses are a little expensive in the market, but they do not have a high chance of breaking. When used carefully both these flosses help in removing plaque from teeth.
TECHNIQUE OF FLOSSING:
Here is a stepwise technique to help you floss your teeth in a right way.
About 18 inches of floss is required to floss your teeth. So break an 18-inch floss and wrap it between your index finger and your middle finger or between both the middle fingers of your hand. Hold a small portion of it with both your index fingers and wind it into a C shape holding it very tight against each tooth.
Slide it gently between your teeth, but winding it into C shape and sliding between each tooth by upward and downward motions with the gum, it removes plaque and other dirt particles. Repeat the same procedure for all teeth. This method should be performed at the back side of the tooth too.
The used floss should be thrown away once you are finished flossing because used floss may not be so effective next time and also may leave bacteria and debris back in your mouth that you worked so hard to remove. So, if you think of saving one floss, you bring back all the bacteria again in your mouth. One must be very careful about that.
Always make sure that you are cleaning the first two teeth and then completing the upper row. Make sure you make this a habit. Do not wrap this dental floss so tight around your fingers as it can cut off or dig in your skin. Make sure you unwind it or loosen it.
Always be gentle while flossing near the gums as it may lead to bleeding of gums and causing hurt. It is completely normal to bleed when you are flossing for the first time but when you are bleeding for the 4th or 5th time it is necessary that you may visit your dentist as your gums might not be healthy.
Make sure that you floss completely so that you do not feel any debris or dirt is still stuck in between your teeth.
Make at least 8 to 10 moves for every tooth in a circular motion as this will be more effective.
Brushing is not really necessary after flossing but You can also use mouthwash to feel more fresh and clean.
You can rinse your mouth with a fluoridated or chlorhexidine mouthwash as they remove any other left out traces of bacteria after flossing. Rinsing with mouthwashes also give you an additional advantage of protection against cavities.
